This film speaks volumes. Its the type of experience that starts it all...

EDL leader Tommy Robinson Takes on Rapper Akala

Thanks Jess, first I'd ever heard of Akala ...

The Eye of Africa

This prominent circular feature in the Sahara desert of Mauritania is known as the Eye of Africa, The Richat Structure, and The Earth's Bulls-eye. It is often noted by astronauts because it forms a conspicuous 50-kilometer-wide (30-mile-wide) bull’s-eye on the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert which makes it clearly visible from space.

According to NASA, The Eye of Africa was once thought to be an asteroid impact crater, the structure’s flat middle and lack of shock-altered rock indicates otherwise. The possibility that the structure was formed by a volcanic eruption also seems improbable because of the lack of a dome of igneous or volcanic rock. Rather, the layered sedimentary rock is now thought by many to have been caused by uplifted rock sculpted by erosion. Why the Eye of Africa is nearly circular remains a mystery.

Woman catches robber & imprisons him as sex slave

handcuffed manIt's just your classic tale of man tries to rob beauty salon, woman salon owner beats him up and drags him into the back room ... feeds him only Viagra and water, and keeps him as a sex slave for three straight days. It happened in real life, though it totally sounds like something right out of Pulp Fiction. Was Ving Rhames there? Anyone order a Royale with cheese?
This all went down in a rural Russian town where apparently women are raised to be ass-kicking sex-fiends with a penchant for keeping small businesses, and hostages. Olga Zajac, the 28-year-old salon owner, is one blonde beauty you don't want to mess with -- she's a black belt in karate and allegedly floored the robber with just one swift kick.
How long 'til you think Olga's on a plane to Hollywood to meet Quentin Tarantino?
Olga dragged the robber, 32-year-old Viktor Jasinski, into the back room and tied him up with a hair dryer cable and cuffed him to a radiator. Seeing as they were in a salon, I bet there were tons of those things lying around. She sounds resourceful. Anyway, she allegedly took off all his clothes and then proceeded to use him as a sex slave for three days. You know, to teach him a lesson. Smart move on her part force-feeding him the little blue pill ... I'm pretty sure he was not going to be naturally aroused.
Olga released Viktor after she was satisfied he'd learned a thing or two, and Viktor, to my surprise, went straight to the police. And when the cops came to the salon to ask Olga what happened, she said the coldest thing ever:
What a bastard! Yes, we had sex a couple of times. but I bought him new jeans, gave him food, and even gave him 1,000 Roubles when he left.
Dang, Olga! If only new jeans could smooth over a three-day rapefest.
Both Olga and Viktor have been arrested, so it may take a while, but I'm sure Tarantino will fly Olga out at her earliest opportunity. She's the bad ass female lead we have been waiting for. She could play herself in a Tarantino thriller reminiscent of Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. Maybe Daniel Craig could play the victimized Viktor. I can see it now ...
What do you think?

Edmar Castenada: tiny desk concert

The kid got mad skills of his own...

Felix Contreras over at NPR.ORG posts...

Edmar Castaneda is the sort of musician who isn't afraid to challenge the established order. He's carving out a place for himself in Latin jazz on an instrument you don't often hear in his chosen genre: the Colombian harp. He's adapted intricate traditional fingerpicking techniques to play jazz melodies along with the Afro-Cuban tumbao (bass line). As you can see and hear for yourself in this Tiny Desk Concert, he can switch between rural Colombian dance music and jazz with a twist of his wrist. Literally.

His musical vision is so invigorating that he's gaining fans like NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera, with whom Castaneda has performed. His Web site shows him constantly on the road as a guest artist with other forward thinkers, or with his latest touring trio, which consists of Castaneda, a drummer and a trombonist.

Castaneda recently parked himself behind Bob Boilen's desk and crafted a transporting mix of tradition and improvisation. Chances are, you've never heard anything like it.
Tis the plight of the MultiCultural to be constantly greeted with the single story.

Some may take this with a grain of salt, others with a spoonfull of sugar... certainly food for thought.

We Live In Public - Ondi Timonor's new movie

On the 40th anniversary of the Internet, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC tells the story of the effect the web is having on our society, as seen through the eyes of “the greatest Internet pioneer you’ve never heard of,” visionary Josh Harris. Award-winning director, Ondi Timoner (DIG!), documented his tumultuous life for more than a decade, to create a riveting, cautionary tale of what to expect as the virtual world inevitably takes control of our lives.

Josh Harris, often called the “Warhol of the Web,” founded Pseudo.com, the first Internet television network during the infamous dot-com boom of the 1990s. He also created his vision of the future: an underground bunker in NYC where 100 people lived together on camera for 30 days over the turn of the millennium.
Scary!

LIFE Inc.- The movie

In Life Inc., award-winning writer, documentary filmmaker, and scholar Douglas Rushkoff traces how corporations went from a convenient legal fiction to the dominant fact of contemporary life. Indeed as Rushkoff shows, most Americans have so willingly adopted the values of corporations that they’re no longer even aware of it.
